Alfred was born the son of Edmund Hendley Richards Jr. and Nancy Jane Warner in Macoupin County IL. Alfred's father and relatives farmed about 3 milea east of Modesto and Palmyra, near the Oak Grove cemetery [land originally settled by John D. Chapman, husband of Charity C. Richards].

Alfred married Sarah A. Vance, daughter of Isaac Newton Vance and Lovera Cherry, on December 28 1855 in Macoupin County IL. Sarah was born in 1838.

In 1860 Sarah was living with her parents, not married, and was using her maiden name Vance again. She had a second marriage in Macoupin Co on 15 December 1867 with David H. King. Sarah had six children with David, but none with Alfred. Sarah died at Palmyra, Macoupin County on 13 February 1919.

Alfred was living with the Ambrose Gross family in Scott County IL in 1860 census record. He is listed as a farm laborer at that time. Winchester IL was listed as the Post Office for the Gross families' location.

Alfred served the Union in the Civil War in Company "A", 32nd Illinois Infantry. On his military report he was listed as: 5 ft. 5 in., auburn hair, blue eyes, dark complexion, married, farmer, 26 years old, from Palmyra IL.
He was mustered in August 21 1861 at Camp Butler IL.
DECLARED A DESERTER BY GENL ORDER NO 70 WAR DEPT 1862 WAS SENT TO SAVANNAH MAY 26, 1862 DETAILED WAS TAKEN SICK PLACED IN HOSPITAL NEVER HEARD FROM SINCE.

It appears that Alfred died of his sickness. His wife Sarah received a pension dated May 20 of 1863, and she is listed as a "widow". On July 10 of 1888, a minor is listed as beneficiary of his pension, a Martha A. Gilbert.
