Lankston was born the son of Edmund Hendley Richards Jr. and Nancy Jane Warner in Macoupin County IL.

Lankston married Elizabeth "Eliza" Jane Hays on May 7 1850 in Morgan County IL. Eliza passed away on January 8 1860 at age 25.

Children:
1. George Presket [1855] +Christanna Swift
2. John J. [1859] +Emma Hall

Lankston served the Union in the Civil War in Company "B", 5th Illinois Cavalry. On his military report he was listed as: 5 ft. 9 in., dark hair, blue eyes, dark complexion, single, farmer.
Volunteered: Nilwood IL served 13 August 1862 to 10 March 1864.

Re-enlisted: Clear Creek Massachusetts 10 March 1864, Mustered Out 27 October 1865.

Following newspaper article found, but no date:
"Arrested - Lankston Richards of Macoupin County, who was arrested for passing counterfeit U.S. Treasury notes, was brought before U.S. Commissioner L. B. Adams, Esq., on Saturday last. -- The accused waived an examination and was held to bail in the sum of $1,000 for his appearance at the next term of the U. S. District Court, and failing to give security, was sent to jail."

Lankston married Mrs. Matilda M. Jones on April 19 1873 in Morgan County IL.
