Relatives and friends of Joseph N. Chermak of Alexandria and throughout the community were grieved to receive word that one from our midst had passed away. He died peacefully at his home at Alexandria Tuesday, April 4, at 6:10 p.m., being at the time of his death 61 years, 7 months and 4 days.
Joseph N. Chermak was born in Ben Wade township, Pope county, Minn., August 31, 1877. He was the oldest son of Josephine Vishek and John Chermak, who were pioneers coming here from Bohemia and homesteaded on a farm in Ben Wade township, Pope county. Here he went to school and was baptized and confirmed in the Catholic faith at St. John's church at Reno. He was one of the prominent and faithful members of St. John's church until he came to Alexandria when he affiliated with the St. Mary's church at Alexandria. At the age of 25 years he was united in marriage to Mary Cihlar daughter of one of our pioneer families, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Cihlar of Hudson township February 18, 1903, at the Reno Catholic church. To this union, six children were born, three daughters and three sons, all of whom survive their father, together with the bereaved wife: Frances (Mrs. Chester Twite) of Sedan; Henry and John of Alexandria; Lillian, Adolph and Florence at home. Five grandchildren also survive. Surviving also are three sisters: Mary (Mrs. John Kalina) and Frances (Mrs. Frank Prchal) both of Lake Mary; Josephine (Mrs. Frank Langer) of Manitowoc, Wis., one brother, Charles of Lowry. Two brothers and his parents have preceded him in death, one infant son, John and Frank who passed away when 33 years old. Mr. and Mrs. Chermak lived on a farm in Reno township since they were married about 4 1/2 miles northeast of Lowry, where they worked faithfully together and prospered in their vocation, until in the fall of 1936 they gave up active work and moved with their family to their home in Alexandria. Mr. Chermak had been in robust health until two years ago, since which time he has steadily failed. He had consulted medical aid at Rochester and elsewhere, and all that human hands could do was done for hi, but tis was of no avail and God called and he answered his call. Deceased was a devoted husband and father and will be greatly missed by his wife and children. He had a quiet and respectable personality and was well liked by all with whom he associated. All his children were at his bedside at the time of his death, with the exception of his daughter Frances who was unable to reach him in time. Funeral services were held on Thursday, April 6 at 10:00 o'clock from the Anderson Funeral Home and at 11 from St. Mary's church. Father Renner officiating. Interment was made in St. Mary's cemetery. Pallbearers were six nephews: John and Tom Kalina, John and Adolph Prchal, Walter Chermak and Frank Cihlar.
