Joseph was born in Seneca Township, Guernsey Co. (now Noble Co.), Ohio. He moved with his family to Iowa when he was around 8 years old.
He enlisted in the Union Army at Corydon, IA and joined Company I, 4th Regiment, of the Iowa Infantry on Aug. 2, 1861. On Sept. 1 he mustered in as a Private at Camp Jessie. He died in late Dec. at Rolla, Missouri--no cause of death is listed in his military record.
