George was born and raised in Iowa. It is thought he spent time in Idaho with older brother David as a boy during the 1860s before returning to Iowa. He married Mary Ellen McConnell (no relation) on Feb. 1, 1876 in Allerton, IA. They moved to Idaho in the fall of 1879 in the company of their first child, John R., and George's brother Charles' fiancee, Laura Kirby.

George and Mary homesteaded in the lower Boise River valley near several of his brothers, on McConnel Island. In 1890 they sold the last of their land there and claimed a new homestead very close to Parma. Around 1896 they moved to the foothills of Squaw Butte between Emmett and Sweet. In addition to farming, George also ran freight teams to the Owyhee County mining areas.

On July 12, 1893, GW was appointed constable for Canyon County by the County Commision as requested by petitioners in the Parma Precinct. He is known to have served until at least July of 1894.

George and Mary had nine children before Mary died in 1902. George then moved to near Milton-Freewater, Oregon, and in 1904 married Ada Shumway. George and Ada had one child, Ross Dale.
