HENRY CRITTENDEN MAYFIELD, 1842 - 1907

My great-grandfather Henry Crittenden Mayfield, son of Uriah and Mary Jane Grimes Mayfield, was born on Wednesday, August 31, 1842 in either the City of Quincy or in the Ursa Township of Adams County, Illinois. He lived all of his life in Adams County except for a period in the 1850's to 1860-61 when his mother moved the family back to her former home of St. Matthew Parish near Louisville in Jefferson County Kentucky. She and the children moved back to Ursa in Adams County, Illinois sometime prior to September of 1862. Henry was also absent from Adams County, Illinois during the three years he spent from 1862 -1865 as an Infantryman during the Civil War and was with Sherman at Atlanta and his march to the sea. He and Amanda Margaret Wade, daughter of Edward and Mary Haggard Wade of Plymouth, Hancock County, Illinois, were married on Wednesday, December 23, 1868 in Macomb, McDonough County, Illinois. He died at 10:00 p.m. on Christmas Eve, Tuesday, December 24, 1907 near the place of his birth, in Marcelline, Adams County, Illinois and is buried near there with his wife and their son Lamont in the Keath Cemetery.
