Rev Donald Nealis CP, 75, died Monday at Calvary Monastery, Shrewsbury MA, following an illness. Born Sylvester Nealis in Avoca 10 Aug 1901, he was the son of the late Thomas and Mary O'Brien Nealis. He was educated in the Duryea Public School system and graduated from Scranton Business College and the University of Pennsylvania Wharton School of Finance. He entered Holy Cross Prep College in 1924 and was professed two years later. He was ordained to the holy priesthood 21 May 1932. He was director of students at Holy Cross Prep from 1933-34 and director of lay retreats from 1934-40. He later was named provincial econome. Father Nealis was a lieutenant commander in the US Navy during World War II in the South Pacific. Following his discharge, he was named business manager of Sign magazine, where he served for over 20 years. He was stationed at St Joseph's Monastery in Baltimore and Holy Family Monastery in Hartford CT. He went to Boston Monastery in 1971 due to ill health. Surviving are three sisters, Miss Nan Nealis RN, Miss Mae Nealis and Mrs Elizabeth Neary, and a nephew and a niece, all of Avoca.
