THERE AIN'T NO CAN'TS, JUST A FEW CAN'T HARDLYS

On Friday, September 10, 2021, Kenneth Charles Wells passed away at the age of 87. Kenneth was born October 4, 1933 in Tadmor, Texas. He was the youngest and last surviving child of Jesse James and Pearl (McCall) Wells. He passed from this life just a few days shy of his 88th birthday. Truly a generation has passed in the Wells Family.
Kenneth was a very talented worker, especially in operating equipment. He was a man that took pride in his work, and everything he did had to meet his precise standards. Through the years he worked in the oil field, logging woods, and sawmills. There wasn't a piece of equipment that he couldn't operate. As a young man, he worked in the oilfield driving a gin pole truck and later, he and his brother, LeRoy, went into the heavy equipment business. He had one of the first developed cutter blades for a bulldozer that was seen in this area. He was intrigued by sawmills, and helped design, build, and operate many sawmills in East Texas. Even up into his early 80's, he daily went to work at the sawmill with his son Charles, doing things from driving a rubber tire-loader, to cutting lumber, and hauling it to the dry kiln in Alto.
He believed in helping his community. He got the charter for the Ratcliff Volunteer Fire Department that was started in 1975. He was an active member for over 45 years. He enjoyed doing his part in the fire department whether attending weekly meetings or staying up late at night flagging traffic. No matter what the need was with the department he was always willing to lend a hand.
When you got into a conversation with Kenneth, you'd find out he had a unique, witty personality. When someone would greet him with "How have you been doing?", he'd say something like, "I believe it's going to get worse." Or if you said he was looking good, he'd always reply with, "There's never been anything wrong with my looks." He believed anyone could do anything they put their mind to; he'd quickly remind you that "There ain't no cant's, just a few can't hardlys."
Every afternoon at 3:00 you could find Kenneth drinking coffee with his family and anyone that stopped by. He loved spending this time figuring out how people were connected either through family or location, and would spend hours reminiscing about them. There were very few times he couldn't place you or your family, because he knew so many people around the area from his years of working and living here. He loved getting together with his family.
Kenneth Charles Wells was preceded in death by his parents, Jesse James and Pearl (McCall) Wells, first wife, Allie Belle (Hutto) Wells, and siblings, J.H. Wells, Hazel Johnson, LeRoy Wells, and Lois Hammond. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Mary (Griffin) Wells of Tadmor, daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Bo Parrish of Kennard, son and daughter-in-law, Charles and Teresa Wells of Tadmor. Grandchildren, Jamie Parrish, Phil Parrish and wife Maria, Melissa Riley, Charles Justin Wells and wife Misty; Great-Grandchildren – Michael Sheffield, David Sheffield, Sarah Parrish, Jace Riley, Kariana Riley, Julie Riley, Prestin Charles Wells, and Parker Charles Wells, as well as, numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Funeral services for Kenneth Charles Wells will be at 10:00 Saturday, September 18, 2021 in the Callaway-Allee Memorial Chapel. Interment will follow in the Old Zion Cemetery.
