Rites for Colonel J.D. Sumner
Funeral services will be held today at 1PM in the Warner Memorial Presbyterian Church, Kensington, Maryland for Colonel John D. Sumner, 81, who died Sunday in the Montgomery County General Hospital.
Colonel Sumner was born in Kalamazoo, Michigan and served throughout the Civil War with a Michigan Infantry Regiment beginning as a Private. By reason of his brilliant war record he quickly rose through the various grades to that of Lieutenant Colonel, which rank he held at the close of the War. He entered the government service many years ago as a clerk in the War Department, where he served until transferred to the Internal Revenue Bureau, where he remained until retirement.
He is survived by a son, Gilbert L. of Lansing, Michigan and two daughters Mrs. Mary Fieldhouse and Mrs. Charles H. Davidson of Kensington, Maryland.
Interment will be in Arlington National Cemetery.
