Minerva was born in Gunnison Utah, parents Jacob & Eliza Jane Carpenter Harris. The family moved to Lincoln Co. New Mexico 1877, homesteaded on the edge of the John S. Chisum ranch. She married Bennett Howell in Roswell NM 1885, Bennett was the ranch foreman for John S. Chisum. After they married they had a small ranch out of Las Vegas NM. Bennett was killed in 1895 when his horse team was spooked and Bennett was thrown under the wagon. Minerva moved to Las Vegas raised her two children there.
