West Boy Killed As Auto Drops 20 Feet

Adolph R. Cocek, age 22, was fatally injured and Willie Barton, 23, was critically hurt when the car in which they were riding slipped off the spillway at Katy Lake and dropped 20 feet into a ditch at 11:45 p.m. last Thursday.

The boys, both of whom resided near Katy Lake, were returning home when the accident occurred. As their car traveled across the lake spillway, going east, it slipped from the edge of the road, smashing through a protecting railing, and fell into a deep, rock-covered ditch, a drop of approximately 20 feet.

Luckily, another car was just behind them, and the driver stopped to give aid, both youths being unconscious. The West ambulance was called to the scene and carried both to Waco, Cocek dying at 1:15 a.m. Barton was unconscious for two days, but regained consciousness early this week and seems much better, though still in a dangerous condition.

Funeral services for Cocek were held from the Church of the Assumption at West at 3 p.m. Sunday, Rev. E.J. Polcak in charge. Interment was at the Catholic Cemetery. Pallbearers were Frank Ondrej, Will Mynarcik, Laddie Halamik, Jerome Marak, R. Baese and Ernest Barton, all close friends of the dead man.

Survivors are his father, J.R. Cocek; four sisters, Mrs. Louis Haidusek, Mrs. Jim Gerik, Mrs. Joe Halamik and Miss Rosa Cocek; four brothers, Eugene and Emanuel of West, Robert of Galveston and John of Leroy.

Deceased was a native of Texas, being born near here on February 11, 1911. He attended Ross High School, finishing there in 1930. He was a member of the Tuneless Songsters' Club of Katy Lake and the Catholic Workmen of West. He leaves behind a record as a conscientious worker, and his large number of friends in this section was indicated by the crowd of approximately 3,000 person who attended the final rites.
