Joseph Brown "Joe" Copeland was born in Wayne County, Tennessee on December 24, 1872. He moved to Itasca, Texas when he was 22 years old. On October 2, 1898, he married Louetta "Etta" Davis. They had 5 sons: Mallalieu Brownlow "Mal" Copeland, James Alvis Copeland, Joe Clyde Copeland, Sterling Wayne Copeland, and Daniel Grady Copeland. They also had 1 daughter: Theresa Atrell Copeland Hardin. Joe, as he was known to family and friends, served as President of the Hill County School Board for 39 years. He served as a postmaster of Itasca, Texas for 2 years. He was a Steward and member of the First Methodist Church of Itasca. He was also a farmer and pioneer resident of the Bois d'Arc community, six miles northwest of Itasca. Joe died on Wednesday, February 24, 1960 in a Hillsboro, Texas hospital. Services were held on Friday, February 26, 1960. The Texas House of Representatives passed a special resolution (H.S.R. No. 278) on March 2, 1961 for Joe's contributions to the welfare of Texas.
