Record the death of one of Star Valley's citizens, Brigham Livingston Gardner who passed away at his home Sunday after a long season of failing health due to heart and lung trouble and indigestion. He leaves his wife and seven children (4 girls and 3 boys) and a host of relatives and friends to mourn his loss.
There are few men who love and appreciate home and family and who hold the love of wife and children, more than Brigham L. Gardner did. While he was in no sense a public man, in fact he shrank from appearing in the public eye, yet few men have more firm friends than had he.
Born in Utah in the early days (June 6th 1852) he saw and took part in a great deal of pioneer work both in establishing the commonwealth of Utah and in establishing the Mormon Church in the Rocky Mountains. When a boy, his parents moved to Cache valley with the very first settlers, being at Wellsville a few years, and from there moved to California, living near Stockton for about ten years, and then returning to Utah to settle at Big Cottonwood, Salt Lake County.
When 21 years old Mr Gardner married his won cousin Lucie Adell Gardner, daughter of Archibald Gardner, and in 1888 moved his family to Woodruff, Utah, and the year following located in Star Valley where he has since made his home.
At the age of 18 years he engaged in the milling business, both grist and saw mills and worked at it until ten years ago, his hand got in the saw, taking off two fingers and thumb. He then took to farming.
He was the father of 13 children 8 girls and 5 boys of which 4 girls and 3 boys are living.
The funeral was held in the Afton Meeting House Tuesday were a large concourse of people assembled to pay their last respects to the departed.
The house had been tastefully draped in white for the occasion, and the choir rendered special music. Thomas H. Wilde, Arthur F. Burton, Wilford A. Hyde and President Geo. Osmond spoke highly of the deceased, and spoke words of comfort to the mourners. Bp. Low spoke of the responsibility of the family falling upon the widow and bespoke for her the advice and support of the male portion of the family.
The interment took place at the Afton Cemetery.
