Her father was John William Gatlin, who fought for the Confederacy during the War Between the States. He served as a Private in the 57th Regiment, Georgia Infantry. Following the war, he returned to his wife, Mary, and Willa was born Feb 8, 1867, which, at that time, was part of Dooly County, GA. It later became a part of Crisp County, GA. The only information I have for the family is from the 1870 Census, conducted on July 27, 1870. On that date, the John W. Gatlin family lived in subdivision #8 of Macon, Bibb Co., Georgia. The following were listed in the household: John W., b.1815,N.C. Farmer,
his wife, Mary, b.1829,GA., Keeps house,
son, Thomas, b.1847,Georgia, farm labor,
daughter, Fannie, b.1848,GA., keeps house,
son, Louis C. b.1850,GA., farm labor,
son, John W., b.1854, GA.,
son, Joseph L., b.1856, GA.,farm labor,
daughter, Marietta, b.1858, GA.,keeps house,
son, Charles Fred, b.1852,GA.,keeps house,
daughter, Theadocia, b.1861,GA., and
daughter, Sarah Willa, b.1867, GA.
(Sarah) Willa married Lee Hampton Webb in 1889 and bore him four sons and five daughters. One son died in infancy, Lee Webb. Her other three sons, John Howard, Charles Fred and Robert Leon lived to adulthood and married. Robert Leon had 3 children of his own. Willa gave 3 of her daughters floral names. Her daughters were Mary(gold) Josephine, Pansy, Sara Willa, Violet, and Kate W. (who is mentioned in only the 1910 census. Both Violet and Kate were b.1905 so could have been twins.) Willa Gatlin Webb lost her husband in 1912 and remained a widow until her death, choosing not to remarry. She passed from this world in Aug, 1943 at the age of 76 yrs. She was loved & missed by her children, grandchildren and many friends. She was buried near her husband and baby boy, joining them both in Paradise. Family lore has it that she is related to the person who invented the "Gatling" gun, who would be Richard Jordan Gatling, although I've not been able to make the connection at this time.
