He was the son of Joel Gilbert Gower and France Gower. A native of Lexington, TN, he received his education in Pemiscot County, MO. He moved to Leland in 1936 where he resided until coming to Greeville. He was a farmer until his retirement.

He was a member of the Bogue Baptist Church in Leland.

Survivors inclued his wife, Mrs. Dorothy Gower of Greenville; one daughter Mrs. Louise Etheridge (Wayne); one son, Joseph Wilburn Gower Jr. of Austin, TX; three sisters, Mrs. Ethel Dixon of Milan, TN, Mrs. Tennie Pierce and Mrs. Rancie Bridges, both of Jackson, TN; five brothers, M. L Gower of Lelamd, George W. Gower of Kokomo, IN, Heman Gower of Memphis, TN, Arlie T. Gower and J. W. Gower both of Jackson TN and five grandchildren.
