Sister of Mercy, Teacher, Counselor, Wisdom Figure

Sister Mary Carmen Brown, RSM, entered eternal life on Wednesday, December 8, 2010 at McAuley Center, Farmington Hills, Michigan. She was 99 years of age and had been a Sister of Mercy for 80 years.

She was born to George and Anna Maria (Schmidt) Brown on October 26, 1911 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. She was baptized Agatha and attended St. James Parish School and Mt. Mercy Academy. It was there she became acquainted with the Sisters of Mercy and joined the community in September 1930. She was given the name Sister Mary Carmen, and after a period of personal and professional preparations, she made perpetual vows at the Sisters of Mercy Provincial House in Cincinnati, Ohio, on August 16, 1936.

Sister Mary Carmen earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa, and a Master of Arts Degree from the University of Detroit in Detroit, Michigan. She served in elementary and secondary education for 52 years as a teacher, counselor, and librarian. Students in Grand Rapids, Saginaw, Cheboygan, Detroit, Ada, Farmington Hills, and Holland were guided by this devoted teacher. Whether as dean of girls at Mt. Mercy Academy in Grand Rapids or as teacher and counselor at Mercy High School in Farmington Hills, she provided a learning environment that developed interest and accomplishment.

At the age of 74, she retired to McAuley Center where she enjoyed being with other sisters and helped wherever she could. She was especially happy to be there with her sister, Sister Mary Georgia.

In her retirement years Sister Mary Carmen discovered she was an artist. Her water color paintings reflected her spirit in quiet, pastel tones and are cherished by those who have one. As the years continued, she carried her physical sufferings with great patience, spent many hours in prayer, and maintained a lively interest in life. She was especially concerned that her beloved Mercy High School would continue to provide young women with an excellent education.

Fond memories of Sister Mary Carmen are voiced by many of her community, colleagues, and former students. One of these, Sister Regina Marie Doelker, recalled her days at Mercy as a student and later as a colleague. "Sister Carmen was an excellent teacher," said Sister Regina. "She had a personal interest in each student and remembered us over the years. Her later service at Mercy as a guidance counselor was marked by her ability to listen and to advise. She was always able to temper serious matters with a gentle trust that all would be well. She was, indeed, a wisdom figure for all of us."

Other sisters remember her, too, as a gracious companion, a joyful spirit and a woman gifted with common sense. She also loved her family and enjoyed vacationing with her sisters as long as she was able. She is survived by many nieces and nephews, colleagues, and her religious community.
