SISTER MARY GEORGIA BROWN

SISTER MARY GEORGIA BROWN, RSM, age 95, died at McAuley Retirement Center on June 1, 2006. She was a Sister of Mercy for 78 years. She was born to GEORGE C. and ANNA (SCHMIDT) BROWN on November 5, 1910 in Grand Rapids, Michigan, the sixth of eleven children.

She joined the Sisters of Mercy following her graduation from Mount Mercy Academy in 1928, and made perpetual vows on August 15, 1934. Sister Mary Georgia earned a teacher's certificate from Mount Mercy Normal School; a bachelor's degree in English from Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa; a bachelor's in library science and a master's in German from the University of Michigan; and a master's in English from the University of Detroit. From 1931 until 1942, Sister Mary Georgia taught in parochial schools in Saginaw, Ludington, Posen, Grand Rapids and Muskegon, Michigan. Mercy College opened its doors in Detroit in 1941 and the next year Sister Mary Georgia was named its librarian, a post she held until 1964. For the next eight years she served as assistant librarian and taught classes at the college. Sister Mary Georgia moved to Leila Hospital in Battle Creek in 1972, where she lived with the Sisters of Mercy who staffed the hospital and served as medical librarian. She also visited the elderly at Springhill Manor and became a volunteer at the Willard Library. The Calhoun County Genealogical Society awarded her a lifetime membership and a certificate of appreciation for her contributions, which included publishing an Index to the 1860 Federal Census for Calhoun County, MI (1986), Calhoun County: the Civil War Connection (1989) and Calhoun County: the 1812 Connection (1991). In 1995, Sister Mary Georgia moved to McAuley Center where she served in the community archives and library before retiring to a life of prayer in 2001. Sister Mary Georgia is remembered for the enthusiastic pursuit of learning that she shared with her colleagues and students at Mercy College. She enjoyed mental challenges and was a good match for anyone in a game of Scrabble. She relaxed by listening to classical music, especially Beethoven and Mozart, and by taking long walks. She was an advocate for the elderly and persons in need.

Sister Mary Georgia is survived by her sister, SISTER MARY CARMEN BROWN, RSM, by several nieces and nephews and by the members of her religious community. A welcoming service will be held at McAuley Center, 28750 Eleven Mile Road, Farmington Hills on June 4, 2006 at 3 p.m., with a Scripture service that evening at 7 p.m. The Mass of Resurrection will be held at McAuley Center on June 5 at 10:30 a.m. Burial will follow in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Southfield. McCabe Funeral Home, Farmington Hills, is in charge of arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to the Mercy Ministry Fund, 29000 Eleven Mile Road, Farmington Hills, MI 48336.
