DAN H. MUDD DIED TODAY
Former Edina Mayor and Hardware Man Was Failing Six Months—Funeral Saturday.

Dan H. Mudd, once mayor of Edina and a leader in civic movements, died at 6:30 o'clock this morning at his Edina home of nephritis. He had been in poor health since March when he had flu, and had a bad spell May 2, which kept him confined to his home about a month during the early days of which his life was despaired of. He was then up and about, but suffered another attack a week ago and was bedfast until his death. He was 72 years old.
Complete arrangements have not been made for the funeral, but services will be at St. Joseph's Church of which parish Mr. Mudd ws a member, probably Saturday morning.Burial will be in the new Catholic cemetery.
He is survived by his widow and eight children, who are, in the order of their ages: Miss Prudence Mudd; Joseph L. Mudd, and Lillian, who is Mrs. John Haffaran, of Edina; Sister Mary Coaina of Montgomery, Ala.; Miss Mary Mudd and Ethel, Mrs. Leon Cleary, of Edina; Miss Catherine Mudd of Kahoka and Dan Mudd, Jr., of Edina. Three children are dead, Dan H. and Spalding, who died in infancy, and Corporal Leonard Mudd, who died in France Oct. 11, 1918, one of the first Knox County boys to die overseas during the World War.
There also survive three grandchildren, Leonard and Marjory Haffarnan and James Mudd, son of Joseph Mudd. Albert Mudd of St. Louis and Andrew Mudd of Silex, Mo., are brothers of Dan Mudd and are expected for the services.
Dan H. Mudd came to Edina July 12, 1900, at which time he entered the hardware business in the building where the light office is now located. Later in the same year he formed a partnership with Gibbons Bros. in the lumber and hardware business, which partnership was dissolved in 1909, Gibbons Bros. taking the lumber business and Mr. Mudd the hardware business. He later added a furniture line. Some years later he was in the undertaking business with C. F. Jarvies and later with John Hudson. The last few years he had been retired.
Mr. Mudd was elected mayor of Edina in 1907, an office he held one term. He was always an Edina booster. He built the building, now known as the Mainstreet Theater or Wingen building, west of the public school, and the building to the north of it now known as the Karhoff building. He also built the home in which he lived and died, and the home of Mrs. James Clark to the east of it.
Dan Henry Mudd was born March 24, 1857, at Millwood, Mo., the son of Judge Henry T. and Mary O'Brien Mudd. He received his early education at Millwood, completing it at St. Francis' College, Quincy.
He married Miss Catherine Spalding May 1, 1884, at Lebanon, Ky., the home of his bride.
When a young man he went into the general merchandise business in Millwood with his father, whose interest he bought following his death, and conducted it until coming to Edina in 1900.
