"John Crowell was born on the 15th of April, 1789, in Martinsburg, Berkley County, West Virginia, and he died on the 4th of June, 1884, in Knox County, Ohio. John who was a farmer and tough pioneer, married Nancy Stinemetz/Steinmetz about 1821, probably in Maryland. I found a marriage date of 31 March, 1833 in Pennsylvania, although 1833 would not be correct and the source of this date is unknown to me. They would have been members of the giant family move from Washington County, Maryland to Knox County, Ohio, that occurred in early 1826 along with Nancy's parents and many others. They came with their first two children: Mary, aged 3yrs and John, who was only 1 year old when they set off in wagons. The Crowell/Crowl Home was a large log cabin on a hillside facing south near a good spring about 1 1/2 miles S.W. of Mount Vernon and 1/2 mile South of New Delaware Road. Nancy Jane Stinemetz was born on the 18th of July, 1801, in Hagerstown, Washington County, Maryland, the daughter of John Wigant 1756-1832 and Hannah [Hays] Stinemetz 1770-1840, and she died on the 18th of October, 1843, in Knox County, Ohio. John & Nancy Crowell had at least eight children; 1. Mary Crowell, born 11 October, 1823, Maryland, married Henry Piper, they had 1 daughter, Belle Piper; 2. John Crowell, born 26 December, 1825, Maryland, died 4 June, 1884; 3. Catherine Crowell, born 7 November, 1829, married Isaac Buzzard, moved to Reading, Illinois, and owned a large farm there, sold out in Illinois, purchased farms in Missouri and moved there, address unknown, 4 children, Greece, died in Illinois, Mary Gray, Clara, and Francis; 4. Lydia Crowell, born 13 December, 1831, Mt. Vernon, 1853 married William E. Doty 1832-1868, a Sergeant in the Civil War, married 2nd husband, _____ Bowers, 4 children: J.C., Anna, William and Fannie; 5. Henry Crowell, born 31 November, 1833, Mount Vernon, married ______ Marshall, last known in Louisiana; 6. George Crowell, born 15 December, 1834, Mt. Vernon, no further info.; 7. Hannah S.
