The name Steinmetz / Stinemetz is of German origin but the family is of Jewish ancestry. The name, according to a gentleman educated in Germany, means worker in stone. Nothing is known of the family as they came to this country, other than John W. was born in Germany in 1756 and they came to this country soon after his birth.
An old account book, dating from the years 1813-1821 that is in the family's possession indicates John W. was a shoemaker by trade but nothing is known of his early life. In the book is found the name Amos Steinmetz but his connection to the family is so far unknown.
At Hagerstown, Maryland, John W. Stinemetz married Hannah Hays of Virginia, who was born in 1770. Nine children were born of this union; George 1791, Henry 1792, Solomon 1795, John 1796, Abraham 1800, Nancy 1801, Isaac 1803, Hannah 1807 and Samuel 1810. In 1826, the family moved to Mt. Vernon. Solomon and Henry remained in Maryland. Of unconfirmed linkage was Amos Steinmetz and his wife Elizabeth, who came to Mt.Vernon, Ohio from Wash. Co., Maryland with John W. in 1826, purchasing property which is now the corner of N. Norton and W. Sugar Streets. I suspect they are brothers but have not confirmed their relation. TJD2012

I have found many spellings from the old days differ as only certain individuals could spell and most common folk could not. Each writer spelled as it sounded to him or her.

This large family spread across the states, esp. Ohio, spelling their family name at least seven different ways!
Please be aware of this before attempting to make new memorials. The memorials reflect how the tombstone is engraved and links made for each person whenever possible.
---------------------------
NOTE: ! ! ! ! Usually spelled STINEMETZ, but
STEINMETZ, Steinemetz, Stinemets, Stinemates, Stinmetz, Stimatze, Stinemetze and Stinmets, are also commonly found as well as several other variations. I have confirmed most, if not all are of the same family line regardless of how it was spelled. Spellings vary on hundreds of tombstones and documents but links are certain. TJD2012
