Elmer D. Whipkey, 81, of West Main street, Cameron, W. Va., died at his home at 7:20 p.m. Friday, May 4, 1956, after a lingering illness
He was born December 16, 1874, in Aleppo Township, Greene County, a son of John C. and Lydia Lohr Whipkey. He is survived by his wife, Minnie McDonald Whipkey, whom he married May 13, 1908, and the following children: one son, Wilbur Whipkey, Cameron, W. Va., and one daughter, Mrs. Kathryn Severn, also of Cameron. He is also survived by three brothers: James, Aleppo; Jesse, Cameron; and Roy C., of R. D. 1, Wind Ridge; two sisters, Mrs. Sophia Wilhelm and Mrs. Clara Phillips, both of Waynesburg; two grandchildren, James Whipkey, Lincoln, Nebraska; and Linda Sue Severn, of Cameron; and one great-grandson, David Whipkey, of Lincoln. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews. Two brothers and one sister are deceased.
A former city councilman of Cameron, he was a member of the Cameron Prsbyterian Church and the following fraternal orders: Cameron Lodge 17, A.F. and A.M. for the past 53 years, Cameron Chapter 36, R. A. M.; the Wheeling Commandery No. 1 Knights Templar; and OSIRIS Temple.
A retired merchant, he operated a general store in Cameron since 1928.
Friends will be received after 7 p.m. Saturday, May 5 at the late home, where funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. EDT Monday with Rev. Robert K. Shaffer officiating. Interment will follow at the centennial Cemetery in Aleppo Township. Funeral services will be in charge of the Robert L. Launtz Funeral ome, Rogersville.
