Walter A. Bade, a retired pharmacist and a noted Plymouth area historian, died early today at Rocky Knoll. He was 98.

He had been a patient at the health care facility since Jan. 25.

Mr. Bade was active in community activities. He was a charter member and first vice president of the Plymouth Kiwanis Club and a charter member and first vice president of the Plymouth Association of Commerce.

Since 1952, he had done historical research on Plymouth and Sheboygan County.

In 1963 he compiled a history of the Plymouth Skat Club on its 70th anniversary. He also compiled a booklet on 100 years of service by the Plymouth Volunteer Fire Department. In 1967, he wrote the history for a book covering 90 years of Plymouth as a city, including photograghs of 26 mayors and a record of their leadership.

He contributed historic articles for publication in several newspapers.

Born in Plymouth

He was born July 26, 1880, in Plymouth, a son of Henry and Anna Kroos Bade.

He attended St. John Lutheran School, Plymouth, and graduated from Plymouth High School in 1897. He graduated from the University of Illinois Department of Pharmacy in 1904 with an honorary degree.

Mr. Bade served his apprenticeship with the Barrager Drug Store, Sheboygan Falls, and Pfeifer Drug, Plymouth. He obtained pharmacist registration in six states and managed pharmacies in Wausau, Oklahoma City, Okla, and Corvallis, Mont. He served as relief pharmacist in St. Paul and Minneapolis, Clinton, and Billings and Corvallis, Mont.

He returned to Plymouth in 1914 to open his own drugstore, which he operated for more than 50 years.

Mr. Bade was a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ, Plymouth.

On June 14, 1913, he married the former Bess May Odekirk. She died Oct. 29, 1959.

Married in Chicago

On Oct. 20, 1962, he married Mrs. Gladys Truttschel in Chicago.

They lived at 116 Forest Ave., Plymouth.

Survivors include his wife; two step daughters, Mrs. Eugene (Ruth) Vandoske of Harding, Ill., and Mrs. Lloyd (Dorothy) Conger of Green Bay; eight step-grandchildren and three step-great-grandchildren, and a sister, Mrs. Nelda Griese of Sheboygan.

Three brothers and an infant sister preceded him in death.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Wittkopp Funeral Home, Plymouth, the Rev. Robert Klepper, pastor of the First Congregational UCC, Plymouth, officiating. Burial will be in the Plymouth Union Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home after 3 p.m. Saturday and on Sunday until the time of the service.

A memorial fund has been established in Mr. Bade’s name.
