Elwood J. Bade

Funeral services will be held Wednesday for Elwood J. Bade, 90, of 110 Eastern St., Plymouth, a community leader, who died Saturday at Plymouth Hospital where he had been a patient for two days.

The Rev. Robert Wudy, senior pastor, will officiate at the 2 p.m. service at St. John Lutheran Church, Plymouth. Burial will be in Plymouth Woodlawn Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the Plymouth American Legion Post.

Friends may call at the Wittkopp Funeral Home, Plymouth, from 3 p.m. Tuesday until the time of the service.

A memorial fund has been established in Mr. Bade's name for the St. John Lutheran Church building fund and other charities.

Mr. Bade, although in semiretirement, was president of Plymouth Factory Furniture, a retail furniture outlet which he had formed in the 1930 with a brother.

He was born Dec. 23, 1886, in Plymouth, a son of Henry C. Bade and Anna Kroos Bade.

He attended St. John Lutheran School, Plymouth, and graduated from Plymouth High School in 1904. He attended Michigan State University of Wisconsin, and the University of Wisconsin, where he was a starting third baseman and defensive player on the varsity baseball team. He also was a member of the National "W" Club.

He played semipro baseball near Butte, Mont., where he operated an apple orchard for three years. He also had been active on baseball and basketball teams in the Plymouth area for many years.

In July, 1974, he was honored along with other Plymouth men for his contributions to baseball in the city.

Mr. Bade also had been a member of the Plymouth Volunteer Fire Department and its hook and ladder team.

On Oct. 20, 1921, he married the former Viola Servis in Oshkosh. The couple celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1971.

He had served with the U.S. Army during World War I, attaining the rank of sergeant.

Mr. Bade was a member of the Plymouth American Legion Post, serving in various capacities.

He was a member of the Plymouth Board of Education from 1941-53, holding every office, including president for three years. He served on the Plymouth Hospital Board for several years, and took an active part in fund raising activities. He also was a member of the Plymouth Lions Club.

Mr. Bade was a member of St. John Church and had served on various boards and committees.

Survivors include his widow; two sons, Ralph of Plymouth and Donald of Byfield, Mass.; five grandchildren; a brother, Walter of Plymouth, and a sister, Mrs. Nelda Griese of Plymouth.

Two brothers and two granddaughters preceded him in death.
