Princess. Marie Thérèse Félicité de France, daughter of King Louis XV of France and his wife Queen Marie Leszczynska, was born at the Palace of Versailles. She was the seventh daughter and ninth child of their marriage, excluding a stillborn child born in 1735. Daughters in the court of Louis XV do not appear to have been accorded a tremendous amount of respect by their father. He openly engaged in adulterous behavior with many mistresses. Also, customarily, the daughter of a French king would be addressed as "Madame" followed by her baptismal name. However, in Louis XV's court, the baptismal name was replaced by an ordinal number. Thus, the princess was Madame Sixième. (Her father excluded Princess Louise who died in 1733.) In addition, only the six eldest children were allowed to live at the palace. The four youngest daughters, including Thérèse, were all raised at the Royal Abbey of Fontevraud. She went to the abbey when she was barely two years old. In September 1744, she fell ill with smallpox. Princess Thérèse died at the abbey on September 28th at age eight, never having seen her parents since her departure at age two. She was interred at the Abbey of Fontevraud, the only one of her siblings to be buried there.
