French Royalty. Marie Adélaïde de France, daughter of King Louis XV of France and his wife Queen Marie Leszczynska, was born at the Palace of Versailles. She was the fourth daughter and sixth child of the marriage. She was raised at Versailles with her older siblings. Her four younger sisters, however, were all sent to the Abbaye de Fontevraud to be raised. When Adélaïde reached the age when princesses customarily married, there were no available consorts in Europe. She preferred to remain unmarried, rather than wed someone who was not a monarch or heir to a throne. She found solace in music. The princess was intelligent and interested in politics. After the death of her father in 1774, Adélaïde and her sisters Victoire and Sophie were allowed to remain at the court of Louis XVI. They retained their apartments in the Palace of Versailles. Adélaïde possessed the Duchy of Louvois with her sister Sophie, which had been created for them in 1776 by King Louis XVI, their nephew. At the beginning of the French Revolution, in 1789, she and her surviving sister Victoire left Versailles and resided instead at the Château de Bellevue. However, due to anti-Catholic laws during the Revolution, they left France for Italy in 1791. On the way, they were arrested and detained. When released, they went first to Turin and then Rome. Due to the ongoing revolution in France, they moved further away to Naples in 1796. In 1799, they moved to Corfu, and then Trieste. It was there that her sister Victoire died of breast cancer. Adélaïde outlived her parents and all of her siblings. She died the year after her sister in Trieste. Later, during the Bourbon Restoration, her remains and those of her sister were returned to France by their nephew Louis XVIII and interred at the Basilica of Saint Denis.
