Mr. Johnson retired from the department in 1929 after working on the force for 29 years. During that time he rode motorcycle, manned the ambulance and patrol wagon and for many years was a plainclothesman. He was the first motorcycle officer in Racine. Mr. Johnson was also the first secretary of the police pension board and of the Policeman's Benevolent society. He held the latter position until his retirement. Mr. Johnson was born in Caledonia, May 22, 1873, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Nels Johnson, pioneers in this county.
Surviving Mr. Johnson, who was also a member of the Eagles, are his wife, Eva; six daughters, Mrs. Catherine Rosinski, Miss Helen Johnson, Mrs. Leona Rondone and Miss Florence Johnson, all of Racine, and Mrs. Irene Moye and Mrs. Garnet Berg, both of Detroit; five sons, Russell, Martin Jr., Stanley and Charles, of Racine and Bernard of Detroit; 13 grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. Christian H. Heck of Racine.
Funeral services will be held at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Dahl funeral home and at 9 a.m. at St. Joseph Church, of which he was a member. Reverend H.J. Schmitt will officiate and burial will be in the family lot in Holy Cross Cemetery on Highway 32. His body may be viewed at the Dahl funeral home Tuesday afternoon and until time of service Wednesday. The rosary will be said Tuesday night. Chief of Police Arthur J. Muhlke said the police department will provide six uniformed officers as pallbearers.
