Henry Osro "H.O." Carter, 96, of Palatka, died peacefully surrounded by his family, Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2006, at the Putnam Community Medical Center in Palatka.
He was born in Blackshear, Ga. His family moved from New Lacey, Ga., to Seville when he was 14. He had been a resident of Palatka for the past 61 years, coming from Seville. He started his career with the Atlantic Coastline Railroad, where he was promoted to foreman and was paid $1 per day, which was considered pretty good money back then. He went on to work as a building contractor in Palatka. He then left to attend Florida State University in Tallahassee to become a teacher. Upon returning, he was hired as the woodworking teacher at the former Palatka Senior High School, a post he held for 21 years and from which he retired in 1971. In his position as a teacher he touched many lives. He very much enjoyed southern gospel music and had been president of the St. Johns River Singing Convention for many years. He had also been part of a gospel singing quartet. He also enjoyed gardening, fishing, beekeeping and playing his harmonica. He was featured in the news when he married for the second time at the age of 91. He was well known and loved by many people. He was a member of the Berean Baptist Church in Palatka and was an ordained deacon. He was a 53-year member of the Pineland Lodge No. 86, F&AM in Peniel.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 70 years, Martha W. Carter; his parents, James Henry and Rosetta Carter, two brothers and two sisters.
He is survived by his wife of five years, Helen Walker Carter of Palatka; two daughters, Dorothy Causey of Palatka and Marian Mueller of Winter Springs; one son, James Henry Carter of Altamonte Springs; two stepdaughters and one stepson; one brother, Prentis carter of Copperas Cove, Texas; 17 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 17, at the Calvary Baptist Church, Palatka, with Dr. Scott Downing and the Rev. Dennis Simpson officiating. Entombment will follow in Palatka Memorial Gardens, with Pineland Lodge No. 86 F&AM rendering Masonic rites.
