Grand Aunt Hessie was only 13 years old when her mother died just over 1 month after giving birth to her [Hessie's] baby brother, John Henry Dodd, Jr. It fell to Hessie to be "the woman of the house" and pseudo-mother to her younger siblings, except for John Henry, Jr, who was taken in by a local doctor's family to raise apart from his biological family. 7 and 6-year-old sisters, as well as an almost 2-year-old brother, were among her charges. She did have the assistance of both a 12-year-old sister and an almost 11-year-old sister (my paternal grandmother, Cora 'Dale') but the main responsibility for the mothering and household chores fell on her shoulders.
At the age of 15 - in late 1911 or early 1912 - Great Grandpa John Henry Dodd moved all but the eldest boys and little John Henry, Jr to the Winter Park, FL area, where Hessie was among the older siblings, along with her father, to help start the First Baptist Church of Winter Park, of which Hessie became a charter member.
On Tuesday, 7 Jun 1921, at the age of 25, Grand Aunt Hessie married the man who would become my Grand Uncle George Ernest Parker in Orange County, FL.
Grand Aunt Hessie and Grand Uncle George had three sons together: Edward Henry, Robert Ernest and Richard A Parker.
Grand Aunt Hessie didn't live quite 3 full years after Richard was born, passing away in Orange County, FL on Wednesday, 12 Sep 1934. She was only 39 years old.
