EL PASO, IL. -- The Mass of Christian Burial for Winifred Marie Stack Pankey, 97, of Des Moines, Wash., formerly of El Paso, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, El Paso. The Rev Donald Henderson will officiate. Burial will be in St Mary's Cemetery, El Paso. Visitation will be from 9 to 10:45 am Saturday at Froelich Memorial Home, El Paso.

She died at 1:10 p.m. Wednesday (Jan 16, 2002) at the Wesley Homes health Center, Des Moines, Wash.

Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.

Mrs. Pankey was born May 7, 1904, in Minonk, a daughter of Martin and Catherine Cleary Stack. She married Lindahl Henry Pankey on July 31, 1933 in Peoria, IL. He died May 31, 1970.

She is survived by one son, Quentin "Gary" Pankey, Renton, Wash. Also surviving is a granddaughter, Molly Sabrina Pankey.

She was preceded in death by her parents; six brothers, Edwin, Donald, Ray, Garnet, William and Clenent; and two sisters, Marguerite and Kathryn.

Mrs. Pankey was the last grandchild of Irish famine immigrants John Stack and Winifred O'Connor. She graduated in the class of 1923 from El Paso High School.

In the late 1940's, she was an employee of the Army Security Agency (later NSA) and worked on Project Venona, the successful decryption of Soviet diplomatic communications. These efforts led to the arrest and conviction of Soviet atomic spies in the U.S. her later work as an adjudicator in the Passport Office of the U.S. State Department instilled in her a love of international travel. She retired in 1975.

Her other interests included gardening, sewing, oil painting and cooking. Lately, she had been a resident of the Wesley Terrace in Des Moines, Wash.

Mrs. Pankey was a devout Catholic and a member of St. Philomena's parish in Des Moines, Wash.
