Emma was the second of eight children, and the oldest daughter. On June 27, 1917 she married Harry Hunsinger in Nescopeck, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. Shortly after their marriage, Harry joined the Army. They had one son, Harry Leroy, who was born 8 days before Emma's husband was killed in France. Emma married Roy Derr on December 20, 1919, and they had three sons and four daughters.
