Alice was the fourth of eight children. On July 26, 1922, she married Elwood Charles Shotwell at Bel Air, Harford County, Maryland. The couple raised two children: Mary Elizabeth and James Leroy.
For many years Alice worked as a clerk of elections at the East Berwick voting polls, and worked for the Berwick Hospital Auxilliary in the hospital gift shop. She also worked at F.W. Woolworth Company and the Keystone Printing Company. She was a member of Bower Memorial United Methodist Church of Berwick for over 70 years, and was a member of its Women's Missionary Group and Knitters Group.
