Richard was the youngest of eight children. He married Minnie Cragle in 1941, and the couple had three children. Before the War, he was employed at the American Car and Foundry in Berwick, Pennsylvania, designing railroad cars. After the War, he worked at Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico as a weapons designer.
