Gonzales Inquirer Dec. 15, 1898

Shiner Gazette

Died--At Big Hill, Gonzales county, Texas, on Thursday December 8th at 1:30 p.m., Mrs. D. L. Kokernot, in the 83rd year of her age.

Mrs. Kokernot had been in very feeble health for several months caused from old age. She was stricken with death while at dinner and in a little while her sufferings were over.

All her children with the exception of one, arrived in time for the funeral, which occurred at the family burying ground, on the Big Hill ranch of Mr. L. M. Kokernot, of Gonzales county, December 10, at 2 p.m. Rev. New Harris conducted the funeral services in an impressive manner.

Only two more days and she would have survived her husband, the late Captain D. L. Kokernot, just six years. Had she lived till February 15, 1899, she would have been 84 years of age.

Gonzales county losses one of its oldest residence, coming here in the early pioneer days some sixty years ago.

She leaves eight surviving children, as follows: Mr. L. M. Kokernot, of Gonzales county, Mr. John W. Kokernot, of San Antonio, Mrs. A. Fitzgerald, Mrs. Mary Littlefield, Mrs. R. Kendall, Mrs. Barber, Mrs. St John and Mrs. Lange.

Thus one by one, the old settlers and pioneer of Texas pass into the great beyond, and the hardship they endured and the dangers to which they were exposed can never be fully appreciated or understood by the present generation who lives to enjoy the blessing so dearly won.
