James "Vertner" Gage was born to Robert Douglass Gage (judge & Texas senator) & Lena Van Horn near Pecos, Texas. He attended Carlisle Military Academy in Arlington, Texas. He met and married Leah Lenora Nicholson in 1912, and their first son James Douglass was born there. In 1915 he moved back to Port Gibson, Mississippi, his ancestral home and bought La Cache Plantation on which he raised cattle and cotton. Their other three children were born there. Leah died in 1924, leaving four children with no mother. Their Aunt Eloise Nicholson Parker came from Texas and raised them, until within a few years Vertner married Gladys Virginia Sandifer in 1927. They moved to town and Vertner worked in the family bank and later became postmaster in Port Gibson. They were married until he passed in 1960 from brain cancer. He was greatly missed by his four children and eight grandchildren and numerous descendants. His grandmother was Clan Maxwell and Clan Alexander, Scottish nobility. His Gage line traces to Sire Ralph de Gaugi of Normandy who rode with William the Conqueror.
