Alfred J. “Fritz” Walters, 85, died Wednesday, November 2, 2011 at the Hays Medical Center.

He was born June 29, 1926 in Catharine, Kansas the son of Justice P. & Bertha (Staab) Walters.

On July 15, 1955 he married Bernita Ann Schuetz in Catherine.

He was an oilfield pumper for nearly 42 years working with the Occidential Petroleum Company, and also a U.S. Army veteran of WWII. He was a member of the St. Catherine Catholic Church, Catherine Knights of Columbus, VFW, and American Legion. He was a Past Commander of the Hays VFW Post and was a former 9th District Commander. Fritz assisted in folding 483 flags during his tenure with the VFW and American Legion Honor Guards since 1989.

Survivors include his wife, of the home in Catherine, sons, Mike Walters and his wife Barb of Colby, KS and John Walters of Hays, KS, daughters, Rebecca Pfannenstiel and her husband Jeff of Munjor, KS, Judy Wedermyer and her husband Mel of Lawrence, KS, and Donna Almond of Canyon, TX, sisters, Bertha Lang and Shirley Weigel of Hays, and Dorothy Lang of Catherine,KS. Seven grandchildren, seven step grandchildren, nine great grandchildren; four step great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Jerry Almond, brothers, Florence, Paul, Rudolf, Rupert, Rudolf, Romauld, Francis and Alexius, and sisters, Emelia Cole, Helen Stecklein, and Adelaide Dinkel.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 am on Saturday, November 5, 2011 at the St. Catherine Catholic Church. Burial with military honors by the Hays VFW and American Legion will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call on Friday from 4:00 until 8:00 pm and on Saturday from 8:30 until 9:30 am all at the Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 1906 Pine Street. A Daughter of Isabella rosary will be at 5:30 on Friday followed by a Knights of Columbus rosary at 6:00 and a parish vigil service at 6:30 pm, all at the mortuary.

Memorials are suggested to the Catherine Charitable Fund, in care of the funeral home.
