Francis "Red" Walters, 88, Hays, died Thursday, April 7, 2011, at his home. He was born Oct. 4, 1922, in Catherine to Justus P. and Bertha (Staab) Walters. He grew up in Catherine.

He married Pauline (Leiker) on April 17, 1950, in Hays. She preceded him in death Nov. 24, 1988. He later married Mary Ann (Windholz) Resley on Nov. 7, 1998, in Hays.

He was a meat-cutter at C.O. Mammel's Store in Hays for more than 30 years. He and his first wife owned Red's Chicken House in Russell for 20 years until 1993. He worked at Dillon's on Vine Street in Hays for six years and moved to Hays in 1993. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving during World War II. He was a member of St. Nicholas of Myra Catholic Church, Hays, and a former member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Russell.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Ann Walters, Golden Manor Nursing Home, Wilson; two daughters, Celina Beilman and husband, Gene, Hays, and Bertha Brungardt and husband, Chris, Victoria; a son-in-law, Marvin Kuhn, Victoria; a daughter-in-law, Teresa Walters, Emporia; a stepson, Ken Resley, Wilson; a stepdaughter, Carol Collins, Kansas City, Kan.; a brother, Alfred "Fritz" Walters and wife, Bernita, Catherine; three sisters, Bertie Lang and husband, Ralph, and Dorothy Lang, all of Hays, and Shirley Weigel and husband, Edwin, Plainville; 13 grandchildren; a step-grandchild; three great-grandchildren; and a step-great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife; two sons, Francis Walters Jr. and Dwight Walters; a daughter, Bernita Kuhn; six brothers, Florence, Paul, Rupert, Rudolf, Romuald and Alexius Walters; an infant brother; and three sisters, Amelia Cole, Helen Steckline and Adelaide Dinkel.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Nicholas of Myra Catholic Church, Hays; burial in St. Mary Cemetery, Russell, with military honors by Hays Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday and from 8:30 to 9:45 a.m. Monday, both at Cline's Mortuary of Hays, 1919 E. 22nd, Hays, KS 67601. A vigil will be at 7 p.m. Sunday at the mortuary.

Memorials are suggested to Hays VFW Post No. 9076 in care of the mortuary.
