Graveside Services Held Friday for Rose Halfmann

Burial services were held Friday morning, June 25, at St. Stephen's Cemetery for Mrs. Rose Halfmann, who passed away Sunday, June 20, at the Bayview Convalescent Hospital in Burlingame, California. A funeral mass had been held for her at St. Gregory's Catholic Church, San Matero [sic], California, on Tuesday.

Mrs. Halfmann, who was 98 at the time of her death, was born at Marytown, Wisconsin, on February 28, 1884, to Hubert and Sophia Kraus. While she was still an infant, her parents moved with her to Stacyville, Iowa. She received her education there at the local parochial school. As a young woman, she began working at a Stacyville dry good [sic] store, eventually taking over management and then ownership of it, along with her sisters, Katie and Anne.

On April 25, 1911, she was united in marriage to Henry Halfmann at the Visitation Church of Stacyville. Together, they continued in the dry goods business until 1913, at which time they joined her parents and brothers and sisters in a move to the Stephen community. They located on the north farmstead of the former Wheeler-Culbertson bonanza farm northeast of Stephen and began farming in the family operation.

Following their arrival in Stephen, three children were born to this union: Leo, Irene and Paul. They continued farming until Mr. Halfmann's death in 1942. In 1943, Mrs. Halfmann moved to Portland, Oregon, and in 1945 she moved to the San Francisco area, where she has made her home ever since.

She was the oldest of nine brothers and sisters, two of whom died in infancy. Mrs. Halfmann was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, five other brothers and sisters*, and her son, Leo.

She is survived by her daughter, Irene (Mrs. Al Egerman) of San Mateo, California, and a son, Paul, of Stephen; a sister, Anne Mullan, of Canby, Oregon; six grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.

Out-of-town relatives attending the burial services included her daughter, Irene, and her husband, Al Egerman, of San Mateo, California; two grand-daughters, Bonita Schiemann and Patricia Halfmann, both of St. Paul; and a niece, Gertrude Halbach (Mrs. Ray Halbach) of Stacyville, Iowa."
[This obituary ran in the Stephen Messenger on July 1, 1982.]

[*Note--the math is incorrect on the number of brothers and sisters who preceded her in death. The correct count should be 3 brothers and 4 sisters, for a total of 7.]
