JOSEPH KAPITZ
(1865 - 1942)

Joseph Kapitz, Sr., 77, of 2510 Clarks St., former alderman and present supervisor from the Fifth Ward, died early today at Holy Family Hospital. Mr. Kapitz was stricken with a heart attack Monday and moved to the hospital from his home. Funeral services will be Saturday at 8:30 am from the Pfeffer Funeral Home and at nine o'clock from the St. Paul's Catholic Church. Interment will be in Calvary cemetery.

Mr. Kapitz was born in Austria in 1855 and in 1881 came to Wisconsin, locating at Hurley. He moved to Manitowoc in 1892 and in 1895 married Miss Martha Muchofsky. A tailor by trade, Mr. Kapitz was employed at numerous shops in Manitowoc including the Gerpheide and Rockhoff Store and the O.Torrison Company. He was a member of an early day militia company here before the Spanish American War, Company H, Wisconsin National Guard.

He was active in musical circles in the city, being a charter member of the Manitowoc Marine Band and played in numerous orchestras in the city and county. Mr. Kapitz was a veteran member of the City council serving 14 years. He was a member for four years during the administration of the late Mayor Henry Stolze in the early years of the present century, serving another two year term, 1917-19 and was elected again by the voters of the Fifth Ward to serve from 1924-1972.

In periods when he was not in the Council he represented his ward on the County Board. He was named a few weeks ago by Mayor Martin Georgenson to represent the Fifth Ward following the resignation of Harry Brandenburg and served during the November session. He was a member of the Holy Name Society. He retired from active tailoring twelve years ago.

Survivors are the widow; five sons, Joseph Jr., George V., and Walter of this city; Matthew of Kewaunee, William of Sturgeon Bay; two daughters, Mrs. Alvin Hauschulz and Mrs. Harold Schroeder of this city; brother, George L. of this city and 12 grandchildren.

The body may be viewed at the funeral home from Friday morning until the hour of services Saturday. The rosary will be recited at the funeral home Friday evening at seven o'clock.
