Killed by a Falling Tree
A Pole, by the name of Jacob Was, was instantly killed by a falling limb while felling trees in the Grapevine woods, about seven miles west of the city, at 2 p.m. Wednesday.
He was employed by Fred Miller cutting sawlogs on the Studebaker tract.
He felled a large tree which caught on a smaller poplar. A limb eight inches thick was broken from this, and a branch as large as a man's arm was broken from the limb and hurled violent to the ground.
The heavy end struck the Pole on top of the head, crushing the skull and killing him instantly.
The deceased leaves a wife and five children.
He resided on the Division road, where he had forty acres of land partly paid for.
The remains were buried on Friday. His age was about thirty years.
2 Feb 1881 Newspaper credited as SJV, which appears to be Saint Joseph Valley newspaper.
Posan Poland marriage records indicate a marriage date of 18 Feb 1868 of Jacob Was and Marianna Kaminski.
