She reported that he was a widower and had been employed at the Studebaker Corporation. It was her understanding that he was born Feb. 4, 1880 in South Bend, Indiana to Jacob & (illegible) Kaminski.

John Was, aged 63, of 1207 West Thomas street, died at 5:50 p. m. Tuesday in St. Joseph hospital after an illness of three months.
He was born in South Bend Feb. 4. 1880 and had lived here all his life.
His wife, Mary, died six years ago.
A tavernkeeper for many years, Mr. Was in recent years was employed in the salvage department of the Studebaker corporation.
Surviving are four sons, Joseph, Casimir, Ollie and John, jr., and a daughter, Mrs. Joseph Wagrner, all of South Bend; a half-brother, Martin White, of South Bend; four sisters. Sister M. Rita, of the Sisters of Nazareth, Chicago; Mrs. Mary Putz, of South Bend; Mrs. Annette Nunn, of Park, Ky, and Mrs. Sarah Kalamaja, of Denver, Colo., and 13 grandchildren.
Friends may call in the home after 7 p.m. today.
The funeral will be held at 8 a. m. Saturday In St. Hedwige's Catholic church with Rev. Joseph Melvin Lewinski, of Tulsa. Okla., a nephew of Mr. Wagner, officiating.
Burial will be in Cedar Grove cemetery.
Mr. Was was a member of the League of St. Joseph and Young Men's Civic club, both of St. Hedwige's parish.
