Heart Complications Cause Death of Former Local Man.
Clement Studebaker, Jr., formerly of South Bend, passed away at 7:20 o'clock last evening in his home, 1500 Lake Shore drive, Chicago. He had been in poor health for a long time as a result of heart complications, his suffering at times being intense. In spite of this, however, he gave attention to business and made a vigorous fight to keep the physical machinery active and useful.
His passing was peaceful, the end coming while he was talking with a member of his family. The body will be brought to South Bend and services will be held in Tippecanoe place, the home of his brother, Col. George M. Studebaker.
Mr. Studebaker was born Aug. 11, 1871, in South Bend, youngest child of Clem Studebaker, who passed away Nov. 27, 1901 and Mrs. Clem Studebaker, whose death occurred July 7, 1916. After schooling he became connected with the Studebaker Bros. Manufacturing company, now the Studebaker corporation, of which his father was one of the founders. He served in various capacities, advancing in responsibilities until he became president. Retiring from that office and from active connection with the company he became interested in other corporate business enterprises.
To give needed attention to these he moved to Chicago about 10 years ago and had since made that city his home. As president of the North American Light & Power company, of that city, he had heavy responsibilities to which he gave as close attention as the precarious condition of his health permitted.
Mr. Studebaker was married April 27, 1893, to Miss Alice Rhawn, of Philadelphia, Pa. The wedding took place in that city and was a brilliant affair. After a wedding trip they came to South Bend and for a time resided in Tippecanoe place and later in the former Clem Studebaker home which had been moved from Tippecanoe place to South Scott street. Still later they occupied a large and beautiful home built on Jefferson boulevard at Greenlawn avenue, purchased by Vincent Bendix after Mr. and Mrs. Studebaker moved to Chicago.
Besides his wife Mr. Studebaker leaves a son and daughter and one brother, Col. George M. Studebaker, of this city. The only sister, Mrs. Charles Arthur Carlisle, passed away Jan. 3, 1931. The son, Clement Studebaker, III, and the daughter, Mrs. James M. Peticolas, reside in Chicago. He also leaves two grandchildren, Helen Ann Studebaker and James M. Peticolas, Jr.
Mr. Studebaker was a member of Portage lodge, No. 675, F. & A. M. and of the 32n degree, Scottish Ri te.
