MRS. CARLISLE, SOUTH BEND, DIES

Blood Clot Fatal to Woman Long Active in Society and Political Affairs.

South Bend, Ind. Jan 3 - Mrs. Charles Arthur Carlisle Sr., of Carlisle Manor, daughter of the late Clem Studebaker, one of the five brothers who founded the Studebaker Brothers Company, now the Studebaker Corporation, and a prominent social and political leader, died at her home tonight.

Mrs. Carlisle had been ill a week. A blood clot on the heart was responsible for her death. She was 62 years old.

She gained national prominence in her staunch support of the Republican party. She was a delegate to the national G.O.P. convention in Cleveland, O., in 1921, when Calvin Cooledge was nominated. She also was active in state political affairs, serving as vice president of the League of Women Voters.

Mrs. Carlisle was chairman of the women's division of the State Council of Defense during the world war. Under her leadership, 560,000 women were organized for active home service.

Mrs. Carlisle was educated in the South Bend schools, and in Miss Judkin's school for girls in Philadelphia, Pa. She was married to Col. Carlisle Sept. 17, 1891.

Besides the husband, survivors are three sons, Charles Arthur Carlisle Jr. and Woodson S. Carlisle of South Bend, and Richard Carlisle of Glen Ridge, N.J.; two daughters, Miss Eleanor Carlisle [later Mrs. Paul Andrew CAMPBELL] of South Bend and Mrs. LaFayette Levan Porter of Greencastle; two brothers, Col. George M. Studebaker and Clement Studebaker II of South Bend, and nine grandchildren. All the immediate relatives except the son in New Jersey were at her bedside at the time of her death. Another daughter, Mrs. Kathryn Weinrichter, died in October, 1929.

Funeral services, to be held at her home Tuesday, will be in charge of Dr. James L. Gardiner, pastor of the St. James M.E. Church of Chicago and a former South Bend minister. He will be assisted by the Rev. Paul L. Benedict, pastor of the St. Paul Memorial Church in South Bend. Burial will be in the city cemetery.
