On Friday, Sept. 8, 2006, Paul D. Brooks, of Cajun Street, Beckley, passed away in a Beckley hospital following a short illness. He was in his 89th year.
Born Paul Dallas Brooks on Nov. 8, 1917, at McGraws, he was the fifth of 10 sons born to the late Pate and Gertrude McGraw Brooks.
Paul spent his childhood at McGraws. A veteran of the U.S. Army, he and six of his brothers were in the armed forces during World War II at the same time. Paul began a career with the Brickette Plant at Glen Rogers, retiring as a tipple mechanic from Lynco mines. He and his late wife, the former Mary Sheppard, a Wyoming county school teacher, were longtime residents of Ravencliff, where they were members of Milam United Methodist Church at McGraws. In 1969, they moved to Cajun Street in Beckley where they became members of St. Mary's United Methodist Church on South Kanawha Street. Mary died on Oct. 27, 1990.
In addition to his parents and his beloved wife, he was preceded in death by eight brothers, Burton, Raymond, French, Sehlburn, William, Thomas, Homer and Holroyd Brooks.
He was the dear brother of Randolph Brooks and his wife, Helen, of Beckley. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Other survivors include sisters-in-law, Martha Brooks of Atlanta, Marion Brooks of Mullens, Catherine Brooks of Beaver, Katherine Brooks of Crab Orchard and Dorothy Brooks of Baltimore, Md.; and a dear friend, Alta Thompson of Beaver.
Service will be 1 p.m. Monday at Melton Mortuary Chapel, Beckley, with the Rev. Stephen Rector officiating. Entombment will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, Beckley.
Friends may call noon until time of service Monday.
Family members and friends will serve as pallbearers.
