Details: On Saturday, June 21, 1919, Alex Maurer, age 71 and James Schaeffer, age 38 were killed by an explosion of gas in the chamber in which they were working. Mr. Maurer is survived by a widow and Mr. Schaeffer is survived by a widow and two children.

Accident was investigated by William Reid, Mine Inspector of the Twenty-Second District, Centralia, Pa.

Fatal Explosion
An explosion of gas occurred at Potts Colliery, Locust Dale, this afternoon when Alex Maurer, an elderly man of Locust Dale, was killed. His buddy, James Shaffer, of Locustdale is also believed to be dead as up to a late hour this afternoon he had not been found. Shaffer has a wife and two children. (NOTE: Name is actually spelled Schaeffer.)
