James E. Couch, 85, died Sunday, Jan. 4, 2004.
Born Feb. 5, 1918, in Lancaster County, he was the son of the late Grover Cleveland and Emmie Shehane Couch. He was married to Nancy Faulkenberry Couch. He was retired from the Lancaster County Sheriff's Department and a retired overseer with F.L. Robertson Ginnery and Lumber Co. He was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, where he served as Sunday school secretary and was a former deacon.

Survivors include his wife of Heath Springs; a son, Mike Couch and his wife, Jan, of Rock Hill; three daughters, Linda Phillips and her husband, Robert, of Kershaw, Judy Catoe and her husband, Charles, and Becky Starnes and her husband, Ray, all of Heath Springs; four brothers, Coleman Couch of Lowrys, Gene Couch of Franklin, N.C., Wilbur Couch of Lancaster and David Couch of Heath Springs; three sisters, Della Adams of Rock Hill, Marie Phillips of Kershaw and Betty Cauthen of Heath Springs; 10 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Services were held Tuesday at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, conducted by the Revs. Michael Cockrell and John Mullis, with burial in the church cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Pleasant Hill Baptist Church Building Fund, 4357 Kershaw Camden Highway, Heath Springs, SC 29058; or to the Matt Blackwell Foundation, 670 N. Main St., Lancaster, SC 29720.

Mahaffey Funeral Home was in charge.
