Martha Ann was the daughter of Malachai Shoemaker and Susannah Shafer. She married Peter Groom on March 7, 1842 in Washington Twp., Franklin Co., OH. He was the son of Job Groom and Mary Polly Bloom. To this union five children were born; Morrison Penny, Sarah "Sally", Nancy "Jane", Catherine, and Job.

After the death of Peter, Martha married John Brookins Gilliland/Gilland on Feb. 10, 1859 in Centerville, Appanoose Co., IA. To this union three children were born; Lewis, David, and Emma "Isabelle".

Martha and her second husband John moved to Grant City, Worth Co., MO. between the years of 1874 and 1875.

Martha is buried in the same cemetery as her daughters Nancy Jane Fullerton, Sarah McKim, her sons David and Lewis Gilland, and various other family members. Her death age seems to be an error on her tombstone. In 1880 she probably should have been 57/58. Her tombstone was placed in the Fletchall cemetery by someone from Iowa.

Inscription says "Our loved one has gone from our circle. On earth we will meet no more. She has gone to her home and all her afflictions are over." Inscription; "65Y Wife of Jno. D.Gilliand"

Martha's maiden name is often erroneously listed as "Haymaker". It seems this error came about because of a long held family discrepancy started by previous family genealogists.
