DEATH TAKES OLD RESIDENT
HENRY LONG PASSES AWAY THURSDAY AFTER LENGTHY ILLNESS FOLLOWING PARALYTIC STROKE
Another pioneer of the county was called to "that borne from which no traveler returneth" when death claimed Henry Long at an early hour on Thursday morning, February 12th.

In the passing of Mr. Long, this county loses one of its oldest settlers, he having come here in the fall of 1856-over 65 years ago.

He was 81 years of age, having been born in the Village of Enthrup, Providence of Westplfalia, Prussia, Germany, August 20, 1838. In 1853, he came to America with his mother and brothers John and Antone. The trip was made on the 'Coriolan' and the voyage consumed six weeks, the party landing in New York September 15, 1853. They immediately set out for the West, going to Buffalo over the newly built railroad and there taking a small lake steamer to Toledo, Ohio, from whence they made the balance of the journey via the Wabash canal to Fort Wayne, Ind. After living there a couple of years, the brothers made their way to Wisconsin and for six months took up their residence in Green Bay, Wis., from where they came to this county in the fall of 1856.

He worked in the lumber camps and engaged in fishing at Bailey's Harbor, where March 2, 1862, he was united in marriage to Miss Delphine Griffin. It was about 1865 when he bought a piece of land in the Town of Sevastopol, where he cut out of the primeval forests a home for himself and family and where he continued to make his abiding place up to about five years ago, when he moved to this city to spend his declining years.

Eleven children was the result of the union, nine of whom, with the aged mother survive. These are John, a resident of Iron Mountain, Mich., Walter of Marinette, Wis., Everett, George, Elmer, and Mrs. George (Nora) Maples, this city; Mrs. Jacob (Amanda)Simon of Sevastopol; Mrs. George (Lillian) Glass of Chicago, Illinois; Mrs. Abe (Marie) Augsberger of Sturgeon Bay town.

The funeral was held on Saturday afternoon from the residence of George Maples; the Rev. E.J. Symons officiating and the remains were interred at Bayside Cemetery.
