Another of the leading farmers of Douglas county who came here in the early days, cleared off the timber and made a home and raised a family, passed away last week when A. Alfred Magnuson of LaGrand township was called to his final reward on May 16th. Mr. Magnuson had been in failing health for the past year and had been confined to his bed since the first of January. Everything possible was done for him but to no avail, death resulting from carcinoma of the stomach.
Alfred Magnuson was born in Sweden on January 9, 1866, and was 61 years, four months and seven days old at the time of his death. He was the son of Magnus and Christine Johnson. He received his education in Sweden and grew to young manhood there. In the spring of 1888 he decided to come to America and in December of that year he purchased the farm in LaGrand township which has been the family home ever since. It was heavily timbered and it took years of hard work to make it a productive farm, but he succeeded in the task and became a highly successful farmer.
In 1890 he was married to Susanna Nina Erickson who survives him, together with the following children: John Axel, Gustave Albert, Julius, Nina, now Mrs. Herman Michaelson of Alexandria and August and Esther at the parental home. There is also a granddaughter, Ruth Jane Michaelson and a brother, Magnus Magnuson, in LaGrand township and Carl and Erick, who live at Seattle. A sister, Mrs. Andrew Erickson, lives in Chicago.
Mr. Magnuson was a member of the Swedish Baptist church and was active in the public life of his community, having served as township supervisor and also as township treasurer for a number of years. He was a kind and loving husband and father and a good neighbor and he will be greatly missed in the community where he spent so many years.
The funeral services were from the home Thursday afternoon, Rev. M. J. Hagli having charge of the services. Interment was in Evergreen cemetery. The pallbearers were: John Bloom, Ole Englund, Alfred Berglund, Ole Lindgren, John Moline and Emil Karle.
