Clark Reid Askam Jr., 74, of Muscatine, died Saturday, Jan. 31, 2004, at Simpson Memorial Home, West Liberty. Services are 10 a.m., Thursday, Feb. 5, at the Geo. M. Wittich-Lewis Funeral Home. The Rev. Don Swanson, of the First Baptist Church will officiate.
Pallbearers are Gary Askam, Craig Askam, Keith Askam, Brad Askam, Steve Askam and Richard Askam. Burial will be in Muscatine Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation is 4 - 7 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2004, at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to Simpson Memorial Home and Iowa City Hospice in Clark Askam's name.
Mr. Askam was born Oct. 26, 1929 in West Liberty, the son of Clark and Irma Evelyn Finley Askam. He was united in marriage to Charlotte I. Epperly on Sept. 5, 1954, in Muscatine. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict serving in the Navy in the Atlantic, Pacific and Korean Theaters. Clark was employed at Oscar Meyer for 30 years before retiring in 1985. He was a member of the First Baptist Church and was a graduate of Muscatine Community College. Clark enjoyed the outdoors and was a long time Cubs and Bears fan. He loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. Survivors include, three sons, David C. Askam and wife, Annette, of Terrace Park, Ohio, Brian K. Askam of Muscatine and Paul A. Askam and wife, Maria, of Bellflower, Ca.; two daughters, Sandra D. Smith and husband, Michael, of Mansfield, Texas and Laura L. Shoultz and husband, Matt, of Muscatine; 11 grandchildren; two brothers, Walter Askam and wife, Leola, of Muscatine and Leo Askam and wife, Joann, of Muscatine; and one sister, Betty Birkhofer and husband, Howard, of Muscatine. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Charlotte on Sept. 18, 1984; six sisters and two brothers.
