Herbert W. Askam, 68, of 431 Woodlawn died Tuesday May 5, at 6:15 p.m. at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the Zion Lutheran Church, Muscatine. The Rev. Paul Ostrem of Zion Lutheran church will officiate.
Burial will be at the Muscatine Memorial Cemetery with military rites conducted by the American Legion. VFW and the World War I Barracks. The George M. Wittich-Lewis Funeral is in charge of the arrangements. Memorials may be made to the Diabetes Association or the Zion Lutheran Church.
Pallbearer are Earl Hungate, Robert Brown, Jack Crowe, Brian Askam, Jay Snyder, and Craig Askam. Honorary pallbearers are Bernard Osbourne, Steve Morrison, Randall Heuer and Carl Stover. The organist is Emily cole.
He was born on Dec. 24, 1923 to Clark R. and Erma E. Finley Askam in West Liberty. He was a life resident of Muscatine County. He married Janet L. Wilson on April 6, 1946 in Muscatine.
He was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church. Army Airforce Veteran of World War II. Wood Workers Union of America. Muscatine and Davenport Men's Bowling Assoc. and the B.P.O. Elks Lodge no. 304 of Muscatine.
He was employed at Huttig Manufacturing for 36 years and later worked at McKee Button Co until 1984 when he retired due to a disability.
Survivors include his wife Janet, at home, a daughter, Patricia Askam Kisor of Scotsdale, Ariz. One granddaughter, Megan Kisor. Three brothers, Walter, Clark and Leo all of Muscatine. Two sisters, Mrs. Howard (Betty) Birkhofer, Muscatine, and Mrs. Lawrence (Wilma) Fiagle of Moline. Several nieces and nephews and many close friends.
His parents, one brother, five sisters and one son James Preceded him in death.
